Tektum have shared with us “Stone House in Faget” their latest project near Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
In the near vicinity of Cluj-Napoca, south of the city, where twenty years ago there were only a few villas, a camping and a lot of tranquillity, spreads Făget forest, traditional recreation and leisure space for the city’s inhabitants.
Undoubtedly, the explosion of real estate business and the lack of green spaces in the city had caused a radical transformation of the area in the last years. The only hope for it to regain its original tranquillity was to introduce Făget area in the ecologic network of preservation “Natura 2000 (Nature 2000)”.
In such context, our office has received the task to design a house on a corner plot of only 441m2 and a 3.5m subsidence in length, for a young dynamic couple, which considers living next to nature to be much more important than the conveniences offered by living in the city.
The house was conceived as being the articulation of two distinct volumes: the stone box and the wood, glass and plaster volume.
By taking on the features of the terrain’s difference of level, the corner zone is characterized by the calm of the horizontal lines, marked by volume and materials, reflecting the nocturnal functions of the house. This body organized on two floors, comprehends two bedrooms, a staircase, bathrooms and the heating system.The living area appears as a dynamic, ascendant volume following the ground level.
Protected by the thick stone walls, the interior space is not separated. We wished that the living area and the kitchen area form a unit allowing the direct passage towards the covered terrace, south oriented. On this volume, the hollow spaces appear as narrow horizontal or vertical slits, which allow visual contact with the natural environment, the WOOD.
